So, it’s been nearly a week. We have some replacements in mind, what does Oppo think? Input on the Impreza or Golf Spert wagoon?
The Front Runners:
New Mazda 3 hatch in this blue. Yum yum. Pros: SO NICE | Cons: Most Expensive
2018 Mazda 3 GT Sport in Soul Red. Pros: Fully loaded, new. | Cons: Ugly, no AWD.
2018 Mazda CX-3 GT in Soul Red. Pros: Didn’t we own one of these? | Cons: Easy to steal
The Middle of the Pack
2018 Subaru Impreza. Pros: AWD, Hatch | Cons: Meh
2019 Hyundai Elantra GT. Pros: Good value and features. | Cons: Wifey no likey
2018-19 VW Golf Sportwagon Pros: Wagon | Cons: VW
Shit you lot have sent me
Stop tempting me to make poor decisions!

2018 or 2019?
![]() 08/15/2019 at 11:49 |

All of the Mazdas will be equally easy to steal since they all use the same keyless entry hardware.
How much are Regal TourXs going for over there?

If they sold the Wagon local to you, find a 3.6L AWD one and enjoy far lower running costs than the bimmer or Benz...

I thought about it. but I worry about the volvo curse

As you may have heard I just bought an Alltrack. So I can answer any GSW related questions. I love it thus far. It is much “nicer” than anything else you’ve listed. I got mine new with a six year warranty, so no VW worries there. VW does not scare me anyway though, cars break . I’ve owned at least one out of warranty BMW M car for the last 12 years.

$0.00
we don’t get the TourX in Canada.
And yeah, I know about the Mazdas,. I would guess all keyless cars are probably the same

The cons on the CX3 made me giggle slightly. Some joy came from the bad situation. I’m pretty bummed it got stolen, I know it was well liked in your household.

The curse of being desirable and awesome?

I have had 7 Volvos with a combined 1, 140,000 miles or an average of 165,000 miles. The lowest mileage i have owned is m y current V60 with 55,000 miles. The most miles was 280,000. I’m not sure what curse you mean!

This. The 2018 GSW would have that massive warranty, so if it has any “VW” problems, they’ll be covered for years.

The M272 in the Merc is generally reliable post 2008 and pre 2012 . Early ones had balance shaft issues and the 2012+ ones had more power but suffer from the challenges of early DI engines.

The new 3 interior is where its at. Just maybe put the keys as far away from the front door as possible.

I would say cx3 again, you were happy with it, weren’t you?
Just try and look for ine without a keyless system
Or maybe put some extra security measures like a wheel lock or something

Last week must’ve been bad on CX-3's, my co-worked had hers totaled by a drunk guy in a stolen truck. She replaced it with a Cherokee, I suspect you won’t want one of those ha!
My vote is Sportwagon as they’re just a little bigger than a CX-3 or 3. Although, the new 3 is quite nice feeling , the price makes my eyes water a bit with its meh powertrain. Old 3 is too old imo.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:16 |

You should definitely
consider the Golf. If you buy now you’ll be able to take advantage of the 6 year/72,000 mile warranty. No one else even comes close to that.
Also, don’t believe everything you’ve read on the internet. Modern VWs are actually quite reliable. Don’ dismiss it.

Crosstrek to spice up the Impreza?

“too big” for my wife
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:22 |

Wifey-no-likey is the biggest barrier I’ve seen.
Go for a new Mazda 3.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:25 |

But the Impreza is okay? It’s just taller right?
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:25 |
|
I have a completely rebuilt 1994 Voyager.
It’s already setup for off road use when needed, has loads of room, is extremely reliable, and is 10s of 1000s of dollars cheaper than anything you listed.
Alternatively, if you insist on stock comfort, maybe my 1992 with 73k would be the better choice.

Aren’t they the same car? One just lacks the mild lift?
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:27 |
|
man, I just work here. lol
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:27 |

It is just an Impreza with a lift and larger tires. The 2.0 struggles to move those tires which is reason enough to me to go with the Impreza instead.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:28 |
|
Man, whatever she want’s she can have! If she doesn’t get a good vibe from a car, that’s fine.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:32 |
|
So you want to get another Mazda, but without keyless entry. Problem solved:
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:36 |
|
The current Impreza is actually really nice, way better than the dud that was the 2012-2016 cars. A 2019 Sport was my leading candidate before I tried a Corolla Hatch and my Mother and Grandmother love their 2019 and 2018 Crosstreks. They are nicely equipped from base model too, with all coming with AA, Carplay, a good stereo, etc even on the lowest of trims. Eyesight is also an option available on any CVT equipped Impreza so you could have a stripper model with hubcap covered steelies and still have one of the best safety systems on the market.
Of course I only know what Subaru of America offers, it might work differently in Canada.
The Corolla Hatch is another one to look at. I’m not biased, I swear.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:42 |

The 2.0 struggles to move those tires which is reason enough to me to go with the Impreza instead.
Everyone keeps saying this, but I’ve been in a couple Crosstreks now and I’ve never found them lacking. I mean they’re no power house, but neither are most economy cars.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:42 |

I get it, sometimes arguments like that just make me go:
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:46 |

You know what's cheaper than an AWD vehicle? Winter tires for a good FWD one.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:49 |
|
Man, I have never personally driven an AWD car (I don’t think we need one) so I can confirm.
I think once we get her behind the wheel of some cars, things may change. She has only ever driven the CX-3.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:54 |
|
And it'll never start so it can't be stolen! I kid, I kid.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:54 |
|
The Crosstrek isn’t an economy car though, it starts in the mid $20ks. It’s the least powerful car in it’s class and it’s noticeable at times.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:55 |

Mazda 3

Copy that!
![]() 08/15/2019 at 12:58 |

Eliminate the ones your wife doesn’t like and the ones you think are ugly or meh. Then from that list I’d go with either the new Mazda 3 hatch or the CX3.

This is definitely the best security measure!

What about a Civic? The New Civic is quite nice I think. A lot of car for the money at least.

Get the new Mazda Hatch!
![]() 08/15/2019 at 15:06 |

I totally agree. I presented that as an option. She isn’t keen on the looks, but I think I will still try for a test drive.

![]() 08/15/2019 at 15:28 |

But make sure it had a manual. Even if theives get in and get it started they probably won’t get very far, if they can get moving at all.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 16:04 |
|
276 is much more reliable than 272. 272's are fine, but they still have intake manifold, thermostat, and cam magnet issues. The most common 276 issues I see are cam adjusters on cars that consistently go 3k miles over on their services.

This!

12 or newer GLK.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 16:10 |

What is the Crosstrek if not an economy car?
I mean a new Corolla starts at $19,000, I wouldn’t consider that anything but an economy car.
Same goes for the Civic, which starts at $19,550.
The Crosstrek starts at $21k, which IMO is just the premium you pay for full time AWD on your econobox.
It’s “power” is on par with both those vehicles in base trim, actually making 17 hp more than the base Corolla.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 16:13 |

Yeah man, I find them ugly! Styling is to front heavy.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 17:11 |

I kid, I kid.
But only kinda. ;)
![]() 08/15/2019 at 17:14 |

The truth hurts bad enough. I've heard they make great track car/engines.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 17:18 |
|
They do. There are a host of reasons why the seals go, and reasonable ways to prevent that from happening in the newer engines. In the end though, I wasn’t willing to spring for a new engine when mine lost compression out of warranty. My dad, however, did and is still loving his.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 17:21 |

Nice, I used to race rx7s with rotary performance in Garland. The rx8 would make a nice track toy

Boo
![]() 08/15/2019 at 17:49 |

I talked a fair bit with the guys at Rotary Performance when I was deciding whether to replace my engine. I learned a lot from them. I believe with a new engine and extra oil pump, I could have fixed all my problems and enjoyed the car for a good long time more for not unreasonable money. But by that time I’d been driving it for 13 years, and I wanted to try something else. If I were to track it, I might have kept it as a daily driver that is also fun to thrash .
![]() 08/15/2019 at 17:51 |

Yeah, you probably talked to Chris? Ari doesn't or didn't do a lot to of the front desk stuff.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 17:56 |

I guess? He talked about how he set up his wife’s car (if I’m remembering everything correctly) , a 2004 auto like mine. Very helpful and easy to talk to.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 19:00 |

So... won’t all the Mazdas have the same issue of being easy to steal?
![]() 08/15/2019 at 20:54 |
|
Did they not find the CX-3? Those are somewhat uncommon cars. If they do find it, why don’t you want it back?
![]() 08/15/2019 at 20:58 |
|
No they have not found it yet. Because theft recovery vehicles are fucked up usually. Insurer's don't inspect mechanicals and it shows on the Carfax as a theft recovery
![]() 08/15/2019 at 21:10 |

Buy the first one, the blue3, life is too short to drive a dumb car you don’t like..

Im so poor though
![]() 08/15/2019 at 21:59 |

If you’re planning on keeping it for a while, that may not be a blemish. My two serious wrecks with my RAV4 are motivation to hold onto it for a while, as dealers wouldn’t want to touch it. My friend had his Endeavor stolen a few years ago and they recovered it in a few days. There was a rap CD inside, but nothing else seemed messed up.
![]() 08/15/2019 at 22:21 |

Nah, I don't want to keep it long as it is
